SIBU: Spinal cord injury patients here will now enjoy more sophisticated physiotherapy treatment through the donation of a brand new BTL-6000 traction medical unit worth RM37,000 by OCBC Al-Amin Bank Bhd (OCBC Al-Amin) to the Sibu Spinal Cord Injury Association (SSCIA) recently.

The donation was channelled through the OCBC Al-Amin Sibu branch under the ‘Equipped to Enable’ initiative, one of the health segments of the bank’s corporate social responsibility platform, #OCBCCares.

The unit is expected to benefit approximately 3,000 patients over a 10-year period through advanced physiotherapy treatment that helps improve physical function, reduce pain and support the recovery process in a controlled and therapeutic manner.

The traction unit allows patients to use force to gently stretch their spines, to relieve pain and improve spinal alignment. The method is able to reduce pressure on the spinal nerves and discs, potentially reducing pain and improving mobility.

SSCIA Chairman, Liu Bee Sang, described the donation from OCBC Al-Amin as a very meaningful and timely assistance.

“This medical unit will bring great benefits to 3,000 individuals who can now enjoy more modern and effective physiotherapy sessions.

“OCBC Al-Amin truly cares about the people of Sibu, and we greatly appreciate its generosity and concern in helping our community,” he said at the handing over ceremony of the equipment at SSCIA premises.

Meanwhile, OCBC Al-Amin Sibu Branch’s Senior Manager, Ho Lee Chee, said the donation was part of the bank’s continuous efforts to understand the needs of the local community and help them for the long-term good.

According to her, OCBC Al-Amin’s aspiration to become Asia’s leading financial services partner for a sustainable future is not only focused on customers but also on the communities around it.

“What we are working on through the #OCBCCares platform is to make a positive impact on the community in three main areas – education, environment and healthcare.
“The contribution of this traction unit is under the ‘Equipped to Enable’ programme which focuses on health aspects. We hope that this equipment can help ease the burden of patients and speed up their recovery process,” she said.

Ho added that in addition to the donation of equipment, OCBC Al-Amin staff also implemented fraud awareness sessions to educate the local community to be more careful about increasingly widespread fraud tactics.

The #OCBCCares platform has previously also implemented several other initiatives such as the ‘Plate to Plant’ programme which focuses on composting food waste, ‘Sun to Save’ which involves the installation of solar panels on the roofs of welfare homes, schools and hospitals and ‘Aided to Aspire’, a special programme to strengthen educational access among the community.

With the continuous implementation of such initiatives, OCBC Al-Amin continues to prove its commitment in strengthening community well-being and supporting the country’s sustainable development.
