KUCHING: Beneath the glow of city lights, hundreds of runners transformed Kuching’s streets into a moving ribbon of colour and energy on Saturday night (Jul 11), showcasing the city’s vibrant after dark appeal through an evening of fitness, friendship and community spirit.

A total of 980 participants took part in the ‘Breaking News Run 2.0 Night Edition’, jointly organised by the Commonwealth Journalists Association (CJA) Sarawak Branch and the Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA).

Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts and Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah officiated the event at the Pullman Hotel before flagging off the runners.

The evening began with an energetic Zumba warm up before participants enthusiastically set off on either the 7-km Competitive Run or the 3-km Fun Run through the heart of Kuching.

The 7-km category was flagged off at 7.15 pm, followed by the 3-km Fun Run 10 minutes later, with runners weaving past the city’s illuminated landmarks before crossing the finish line at The Hills.

CJA Sarawak chairwoman Nancy Nais described the event as a celebration of unity and healthy living.

“Seeing 980 participants coming together for a common purpose is truly encouraging. This partnership reflects what can be achieved when the community works together,” she said.

Nancy also hoped more people would embrace regular physical activity, reminding the public that every step taken towards better health is a step worth celebrating.

Meanwhile, KDJA president Ronnie Teo said the event highlighted the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance, particularly in the fast paced media industry.

“In the media industry, we are always chasing the next deadline and the next breaking news story, but this run is a timely reminder that we must also prioritise our own health.

“By promoting an active, healthy lifestyle through Breaking News Run, we aim to remind journalists and media practitioners to practise work life balance and be mentally and physically equipped to continue serving the community effectively,” he said.

Adding to the festive atmosphere were World Cup-inspired event T-shirts in Argentina, Brazil and Germany themed designs, which splashed the streets with colour as participants made their way through the city.
