BINTULU: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas sees great potential in making bridge runs new a state iconic attraction that showcases infrastructure progress and the spirit of unity among the people.
He proposed that events like the Jepak Bridge Run 2025 be expanded state-wide and turned into an annual state-level event, possibly held simultaneously at multiple locations across Sarawak in the future.
“With the enthusiasm and participation of over 2,000 runners today, it is clear that events like this receive overwhelming support.
“I believe we can elevate bridge runs into high-impact events that not only celebrate new infrastructure but also unite the people and promote a healthy lifestyle,” he said when met by the media after officiating at the flag-off ceremony at the Bintulu Civic Centre today.
According to Uggah, the Jepak Bridge is not only a symbol of Bintulu’s development but also a testament to Sarawak’s success in expanding a modern and efficient land transport network.
“If you saw from a distance earlier, the sight of runners moving in unison across the bridge looked like a wave of humanity.
“It’s more than a sporting event, it’s a manifestation of the Sarawakian spirit, united and proud of the state’s progress,” he said.
Uggah also called on the Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD) to consider organising simultaneous runs on other new bridges, including those still under construction across the state.
“We are currently building 16 new bridges, five of which are already completed.
“I believe events like this are a great platform to celebrate the government’s development efforts and encourage participation from all levels of society,” he added.
One of the locations identified as having strong potential for such events is the 4.8-kilometre Batang Lupar 1 Bridge, which Uggah believes could become an iconic attraction if a run were held on it.
Uggah, who is also the Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, stressed that initiatives such as bridge runs align with the Sarawak Government’s aspiration to develop the state in an inclusive, comprehensive and competitive manner, while strengthening the identity of a people who value progress and unity.
