KUCHING: Sarawak’s semiconductor ambitions have received strong support from the central government, with the state poised to take on a more significant role in propelling Malaysia’s high-tech future.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasised that closer collaboration between the federal and state governments was essential to bolster investor confidence. This comes as Sarawak garners global attention with the expansion of X-FAB Sarawak’s 40K Fab facility at Sama Jaya High Tech Park today (12th September).
“I appreciate the confidence shown in Malaysia, particularly in Sarawak, with an investment of RM3 billion solely for this facility’s expansion. This investment reflects trust in the performance of the state government under Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg,” he remarked.
Anwar highlighted that efficient policies and expedited approvals would remain a priority to attract significant investments.
“As Prime Minister, having a progressive state government makes my job easier. We must drive the agenda forward, refine our vision, streamline approval processes, and offer attractive incentives to investors,” he stated.
He mentioned that the National Semiconductor Strategy had been developed considering Sarawak’s potential.
“The National Semiconductor Strategy recognises Sarawak’s significant potential to become a global leader in innovation and production,” he noted.
Anwar also indicated that Sarawak would have a significant presence at the upcoming 47th ASEAN Summit.
“At some international forums, the Premier will be invited to economic sessions to showcase Sarawak. Alongside the ASEAN Summit, we will promote the semiconductor strategy and competitive incentives for foreign companies,” he added.
The Prime Minister stated that the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur would be attended by global leaders, underscoring Malaysia’s increasing prominence on the world stage.
He confirmed the attendance of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, among others such as Donald Trump, Xi Jinping, and Vladimir Putin.
“Their presence here isn’t just about attending meetings; it’s also to witness the vast potential we possess,” he affirmed.
Highlighting Malaysia’s pivotal role in global affairs, Anwar mentioned that the country’s political stability positioned it favourably to attract interest from major powers.
“Given the current geopolitical landscape and Malaysia’s central position in engaging with the United States, China, Europe, Asia, and now Latin America and Africa, we are well-placed to be perceived as stable, central, and ready to engage with all nations,” he concluded.
