DARO: The area here holds promising economic potential, particularly in carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), due to its mangrove forests.
In stating this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Daro’s economy will be bright because of its mangrove areas, which are able to store carbon.
“This means that if we can store carbon here, it will create a new source of income under the carbon trading,” he said when officiating at the launching ceremony of the Muara Lassa Bridge.
Abang Johari said he has asked Kuala Rajang assemblyman Datuk Len Talif Salleh and urged those in Daro to explore ways to utilise mangrove areas for carbon storage.
He explained that carbon will be stored using a scientific innovation that allows it to be stored in the soil.
“Some people have asked how carbon is stored. It is through a scientific method – carbon captured will be stored underground.
“Therefore, this gives a new source of income, making this area highly suitable for CCUS implementation,” he said
Later in a press conference, Abang Johari said Pulau Bruit and Tanjung Manis will be connected via the Batang Paloh Bridge, which is expected to be completed by 2026.
“This means that the entire Kuala Rajang area, including Igan, will be connected, enabling development activities in the area to align with our economic initiatives, including carbon storage as this area has many mangrove forests,” he said.
It was reported in November last year that Sarawak is committed to establishing four carbon storage sites by 2030, driving CCUS innovations to decarbonise key industries and contributing to the region’s net-zero goals, through Petroleum Sarawak Bhd’s (PETROS) appointment as the resource manager for CCUS.
