SIBU: Community leaders, being grassroots leaders, play a crucial role as agents of unity in society.

Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Central Youth Chief, Kevin Lau Kor Jie, said they play a vital role in bringing together people from all walks of life to foster harmony.

“I hope that community leaders will not only serve the villagers and the elderly but, most importantly, bring everyone together and promote social harmony,” he said.

He said this at the Women’s Day celebration organised by the Women’s Wing of SUPP Bawang Assan Branch in collaboration with the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) Bukit Igu today.

The programme featured a cooking competition showcasing nearly 30 dishes prepared by locals with chicken as the main ingredient.

Lau, who is also Chairman of the SUPP Bawang Assan Branch, said there are three female kapitans in the Bawang Assan area, each playing a significant role in the community.

“They not only serve the community but are also expected to improve the living standards of the residents in their respective areas,” he said.

He expressed hope that everyone would support these three women kapitans and work together to build a more caring society.

Lau also extended his gratitude to Kapitan Tang Chuo Ging for her efforts in securing assistance from the relevant government agencies which enabled more than 30 local families to participate in a chicken farming programme.

“The chicken farming programme can help improve the livelihoods of the participating families,” he said.

Touching on Women’s Day, he stated that women play an essential role, making contributions and sacrifices for society.

“Women’s Day is not only about advocating for fair treatment of women but also serves as a reminder for everyone to continue supporting and encouraging women to rise and succeed,” he said.
