MIRI: In a bid to elevate regional economic integration, the city welcomed a high-level delegation from Brunei Darussalam today for strategic discussions centred on cross-border investment opportunities, with the award-winning Kenyalang Smart City (KSC) at the heart of the Brunei-Miri Economic Collaboration Engagement Visit.

The session brought together 30 prominent business leaders and policymakers from both sides to explore strategic partnerships, particularly within the award-winning Kenyalang Smart City (KSC) development.

In his welcoming remarks, Miri City Mayor and Pujut assemblyman, Adam Yii Siew Sang, emphasised the deep-rooted ties between Miri and Brunei, and called for these informal connections to evolve into structured economic partnerships.

“This visit is not only a reflection of the close geographical proximity that we share, but more importantly, it represents our mutual desire to strengthen economic ties, foster business cooperation, and explore joint ventures that can bring mutual benefits to both Miri and Brunei,” he said.

With sectors such as tourism, oil and gas, green energy, agriculture, and education driving Miri’s transformation, Yii stressed that the city is well-positioned to become a regional economic hub.

“Miri, as the second largest city in Sarawak and a key economic contributor in northern Sarawak, is undergoing steady transformation,” he added.

The focal point of the discussions was the KSC, a 543-acre integrated smart city next to Curtin University Malaysia.

KSC, developed by Imasa Dinasti Sdn Bhd, has drawn significant interest following international recognition, including a top award at the 2024 International Property Awards.

The smart city integrates green technologies, digital infrastructure, and modern urban living in line with the state’s Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

Brunei stakeholders are particularly eyeing investment opportunities in smart infrastructure, healthcare, tourism, clean energy, and education.

The engagement also explored enhanced cross-border trade and the potential for digital trade platforms and streamlined customs processes.

Yii expressed optimism about the long-term impact of such collaboration.

“Let us seize this opportunity to establish meaningful partnerships and build a long-term vision for Brunei-Miri economic collaboration,” he said.

The dialogue session is a major step in positioning northern Sarawak as a regional growth corridor, leveraging shared geography and economic ambition for sustainable development.
