MIRI: The long-standing bilateral ties between Miri and Brunei Darussalam received a further boost recently with the hosting of the Brunei-Miri Economic Collaboration Session by the Miri City Council (MCC).

The session, held at Miri City Hall, brought together 30 Bruneian delegates alongside local leaders, industry players and key stakeholders to explore new avenues for cross-border economic cooperation.

MCC Mayor cum Pujut assemblyman, Adam Yii Siew Sang, in his address emphasised the importance of enhancing the close ties already established between Miri and Brunei, particularly in strategic sectors such as tourism, energy, services and education.

“This courtesy visit not only reflects the geographical proximity we share but also demonstrates our mutual commitment to strengthening economic cooperation, fostering joint ventures, and exploring new opportunities that can benefit both parties,” he said.

The dialogue session also served as a key platform for exchanging ideas and identifying major sectors with potential for joint development toward sustainable growth and regional prosperity.

Among the main highlights of the discussion was the investment potential in the Kenyalang Smart City project, an integrated smart city initiative being developed near Curtin University Malaysia.

The project is expected to be a catalyst for Miri’s economic transformation, and offer vast opportunities for Bruneian investors in areas such as smart infrastructure, green energy, medical tourism and education.

The session was followed by a site visit to the project location and a luncheon with industry leaders and business representatives from both sides.

MCC hopes this session will result in a concrete action plan toward establishing more structured, high-impact cross-border economic cooperation that brings long-term benefits to the people of both regions.
