Another successful nesting season for Miri’s Oriental-pied hornbills KUCHING: The Piasau Nature Reserve is celebrating another successful nesting season, as Oriental-pied hornbills, Jimmy and Valentine, have become parents. In a Facebook post on Friday, Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) shared that an observation was conducted on the nest of Jimmy and Valentine at the nature reserve on March 5 at 2 pm. SFC confirmed that both Valentine and her chick were in good health, marking a positive outcome for the nesting season. This successful nesting is particularly significant as it is Jimmy's first recorded nesting as an Oriental-pied hornbill, with Valentine being his third mate. The pair entered their nest cavity on November 29, 2024, and completed the fledging process successfully. Valentine fledged on March 3, 2025, followed by their chick at 3.30 pm on March 4. This achievement is another testament to the ongoing and effective conservation efforts by SFC to maintain active, healthy breeding sites for Oriental-pied hornbills in Sarawak, particularly in urban park areas.

KUCHING: The annual tradition of distributing ‘bubur lambuk’ in Kampung Muara Tebas took on a special meaning this year, with the Kuching Hokkien Association (KHA) joining the initiative as a gesture of unity and friendship.

Village chief, Sudin, warmly welcomed the participation of KHA committee members, led by Datuk Richard Wee.

Sudin expressed his appreciation for the collaboration, highlighting its role in fostering goodwill between communities.

Wee noted that the invitation extended to KHA was a reflection of the strong and lasting ties between Sarawak’s diverse communities.

“The invitation extended to the Hokkien Association not only showcases friendship but also strengthens the bonds that have been nurtured over the past decades,” he said.

He added that the relationship of mutual assistance, cooperation and harmonious living between Qing Shan Temple and the residents of Kampung Muara Tebas exemplifies racial harmony and peaceful coexistence in Sarawak.

“The uniqueness of Sarawak’s traditional culture serves as the best example for other states to learn from and emulate in efforts to strengthen unity in a multicultural society,” Wee added.
