KOTA SAMARAHAN: Years of developing young cyclists paid off for Buceros Cycling Team as the club emerged among the standout performers at the 10th Edition of the Samarahan Bike Challenge.

The club produced podium finishers in the Men’s Master A, Men’s Youth and Men’s Junior categories, while several other Buceros riders also finished among the leading positions.
After Awang Faries Danish captured the Men’s Youth title, Buceros turned the Men’s Junior race into a showcase of its depth by sweeping the top five positions in a commanding display.
Buceros team principal Dr Awang Zailani said the results reflected years of structured athlete development rather than overnight success.
“When we established Buceros in 2022, many of our riders were only 13 and 14 years old. Today, they are 18 and 19, and many have become national champions while earning opportunities to represent Malaysia,” he told Sarawak Tribune.
He said the club was founded with a long-term vision of producing cyclists capable of competing at the highest level.
“Our vision has always been to develop riders for Malaysia. When they reach that level, Sarawak naturally benefits as well,” he said.
Awang added that the club’s philosophy centres on systematic development, with young riders guided through a structured programme over several years instead of focusing solely on immediate results.
