KUCHING: The legacy and work values of outgoing Deputy State Secretary (Administration) Datuk Buckland Bangik will continue to serve as guidance and inspiration for the state’s civil servants.
Acting Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Seri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel said Buckland was widely known throughout his service for his integrity, principled leadership and commitment to the greater good.
He said Buckland’s leadership had not only inspired colleagues but also set a strong example for future generations of Sarawak civil servants.
“Recently, he was conferred the Top Management Exemplary Officer Award, and I would like to extend my congratulations to Datuk Buckland.
“His resilience, wisdom and firmness — balanced with humility — are among the leadership qualities that we all deeply value,” he was quoted as saying in a report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).
Muhammad Abdullah said this when speaking at the ‘Gratitude of Journey Night’ held in honour of Buckland, who is set to retire on Dec 31, at a hotel here last night (Dec 22).
Reflecting on Buckland’s service, he described him as an ‘elder brother’ figure who had provided guidance and mentorship in carrying out daily responsibilities.
He said Buckland often reminded officers to discharge their duties with honesty, remain humble and exercise firmness when necessary — principles that should be emulated by all Sarawak civil servants.
“In my view, not many possess a calm yet meaningful approach when dealing with colleagues.
“To serve for 37 years with integrity alongside peers is no small feat. The sacrifice and consistent commitment shown by Datuk Buckland are qualities I believe few are able to uphold,” he said.
