SIBU: The Iban community in the Bukit Assek area needs a Penghulu to ensure that community administration at the grassroots level can be carried out in a more organised and effective manner.
Bukit Assek state assemblyman, Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, said the appointment of a Penghulu would enable the administration, welfare and representation of the Iban community in the area to be better coordinated.
“I am very sensitive to the community’s voice that the Iban community in the Bukit Assek area needs a Penghulu to ensure more organised and effective administration and representation.
“I will bring this issue to the Sarawak Government to be refined and considered accordingly. I will be your voice in fighting for this interest,” he said
Chieng was speaking at the First Anniversary and Charity Dinner of the Salim-Bukit Penyau Traditional Game Enthusiasts Association held at Joystar Restaurant, Sungai Merah, here on Saturday night.
Also present were the association chairman, Tuai Rumah (TR) Monica Jelira Jugah, and the organising chairman, TR Andrew Jalin Jatok.
At the event, Chieng also expressed his appreciation to the community leadership at the longhouse level which he described as the pillar of strength of the Iban community.
He stressed that the role of Tuai Rumah was very important in safeguarding the welfare and progress of the residents.
He said that he would also assist in the process of applying for official recognition as Tuai Rumah for longhouses that met the minimum requirement of 20 doors as set by the Sarawak Government through the Sibu Resident’s Office.
“I will ensure that this process can be carried out more systematically and in accordance with the guidelines set by the government,” he said.
In the meantime, the charity dinner was also held to raise funds to support various activities of the association in the future.
As a sign of support, Chieng announced the purchase of two tables and presented the association with a grant cheque worth RM5,000.
“I hope this contribution can help the association plan more activities that benefit its members and the surrounding community,” he said.
He expressed his confidence that the association could play an important role in preserving customs and strengthening community unity.
Chieng also emphasised the state government’s commitment to ensuring that development and progress would reach all levels of society whether urban or rural areas.
“Sarawak belongs to us all. Progress must reach all. Customs must be preserved, education and economic opportunities must be expanded, and grassroots leadership must be strong and respected,” he added.
