SIBU: The implementation of the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan covering an area of over 800 acres is expected to be the main catalyst for a new phase of the town’s economic development when the largest urban renewal project in Sarawak is targeted to be launched this year.

Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, said that after a period of study, review and planning for almost four years, this year is believed to be the starting point for the physical implementation of the project.

According to him, the Bukit Assek redevelopment will not only change the landscape of Sibu town, but also open a new chapter for more sustainable and inclusive economic growth for people of various backgrounds.

“This is the largest urban renewal project ever implemented in Sarawak and a great blessing to Sibu as a result of the vision of the leadership of the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg,” he said when met by reporters at the Lion Eye-Dotting Ceremony held at Tua Pek Kong Temple here on Sunday.

Tiang, who is also Pelawan assemblyman, also hoped that major development projects in Sibu, especially Bukit Assek, could be fully realised and become a catalyst for the long-term well-being of the people and strengthen the unity of the multi-racial and religious communities in the state.

“I hope that Sarawak’s development will continue to be driven by passion, speed and resilience, in line with the symbolism of the Year of the Horse,” he said.

Meanwhile, he informed that several infrastructure projects in the Pelawan State Constituency (DUN) area had also recorded positive developments with the upgrading of Jalan Ling Kai Cheng expected to be fully completed by the end of this month.

In addition, the Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah upgrading project was targeted to be completed by early May, thus ending the problems of traffic congestion, potholes and traffic flow disruptions that often occur, especially when school sessions begin.

“I would like to assure all road users that this year will be the last time they will have to face an uncomfortable experience on Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah because after May, this road will be upgraded to a dual carriageway,” he said.

He added that the implementation of the project is currently progressing according to schedule and is expected to have a major impact on the smooth movement and quality of life of local residents.
