SIBU: The Wong Soon Kai Cup is set for a homecoming as the Bukit Lima Swimming Pool reopens, paving the way for the meet’s return ahead of the Malaysia Games (SUKMA).
The Bukit Lima facility at Jalan Stadium is currently open exclusively for training under the Sibu Amateur Swimming Association (SASA). Public access remains limited, as supporting facilities such as changing rooms, bathrooms, and landscaping are still being completed.
Amateur Swimming Association of Sarawak (ASAS) president Pemanca Tan Kun Gee confirmed that the pool’s roof has been completed and the facility formally handed over to the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).
The Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) recently completed and handed over the retrofitted and covered outdoor learning areas at the pool to the council, following nearly two years of upgrading works.
“The pool can now be used for training. Swimmers have already resumed sessions, and the necessary approvals and letters are in place,” he told Sarawak Tribune recently.
Looking ahead, Tan said plans for this year’s Wong Soon Kai Cup would align with preparations for SUKMA in August.
“Every year we hold the Wong Soon Kai Cup. Traditionally, the home ground for the event is in Sibu, so it will likely be held before SUKMA.
“The key is ensuring the pool infrastructure is ready, while dressing rooms and other facilities are gradually addressed,” he added.
Tan noted that ongoing minor maintenance and upgrades are expected to be completed within the next few months, allowing smoother operations in the lead-up to SUKMA.
Swimmers have already resumed sessions at Bukit Lima, signalling a return to normalcy for Sibu’s swimming fraternity after months of waiting.
