THE Bukit Lima swimming pool in Sibu has been fully upgraded following the completion of a RM3.497 million enhancement project on May 15, 2024.
The revamped facility is now poised to become a key centre for nurturing aquatic sports talent in central Sarawak.
Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, said the upgrade included the construction of a 3,883-square-meter roof that shelters the entire pool and spectator stands, along with the installation of micro-piling foundations, steel columns, and a modern roofing system.
He highlighted that the improved facility offers a more conducive environment for training, especially for athletes and young swimmers during daytime sessions when their energy levels are at their peak.
“With protection from harmful UV rays and sunburn risks, users can now enjoy greater comfort and safety,” he said.
He said this during the question-and-answer session at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today (May 20) in response to a question from (GPS- Bukit Assek) Assemblyman Chieng Jin Ek.
Gerald added that the upgraded pool holds great promise as a platform for talent discovery in aquatic sports and can boost youth involvement in structured and healthy activities.
Looking ahead, he shared that the Ministry plans to implement further improvements under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), in collaboration with the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).
“SMC has submitted a proposal for additional funding to further enhance the existing amenities.
“This pool will not only serve as a sports training venue but will also be revitalised through strategic programmes such as community health activities, recreational sports, and ‘Active Ageing’ initiatives for senior citizens,” he said.
Currently, the Bukit Lima Swimming Pool is equipped with a 10-lane main pool, a deeper diving pool, and a children’s pool. The facility also includes two main pavilions, shower and toilet facilities, a mechanical building, and a canteen that continues to attract visitors.
