SEMATAN: A bus was destroyed in a fire at Kampung Tanah Hitam here this afternoon, but fortunately no injuries were reported.

Nearby villagers had attempted to control the fire using a fire extinguisher found inside the bus before firefighters arrived.

The bus suffered an estimated 80 per cent damage.

Firefighters from Lundu Fire and Rescue station were dispatched to the scene after receiving an alert at 3.22 pm.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak said the firefighters arrived at 3.45 pm to find the bus already engulfed in flames.

Firefighters proceeded with size-up and rescue, exposure, confinement, extinguish, overhaul (RECEO) procedures before extinguishing the blaze using water from a hydrant connected to a portable pump, with two 100-foot hose lines.

The fire was brought under control by 4 pm and the operation ended at 4.34 pm.

Firefighters later conducted overhaul work to ensure the area was safe before returning to the station.
