KUCHING: A bushfire along Jalan Sultan Tengah, near the Sumber Alam building in Petra Jaya, was successfully brought under control today before it could spread to a massive 30-hectare forest.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) confirmed that the fire, which affected approximately 0.12 hectares of scrubland, was fully extinguished at 5:18 pm.
Firefighters from the Petra Jaya and Padungan stations were dispatched to the scene immediately after receiving a distress call at 1:38 pm.
“The blaze had initially threatened to spread to an adjacent forested area estimated at about 30 hectares,” a Bomba spokesperson said.
“Firefighting efforts were carried out using hose lines and fire engines, with water sourced from a nearby hydrant.”
To ensure the area was safe, a drone was deployed to monitor the site from the air, confirming that no more embers remained and the fire had been completely neutralised.
Preliminary findings at the scene indicated that the fire may have been triggered by the burning of cable wires by irresponsible individuals.
No casualties were reported.
