SARATOK: A stop in the town would not be complete without a visit to its local market, situated on the banks of the Krian River.

Like other places, Pasar Tamu Saratok, also known as Saratok Public Market, is housed in a spacious covered building.

But what’s interesting at Saratok Market?

Suara Sarawak had the opportunity to explore the bustling market, which brings together a variety of vendors and products.

If you’re looking for forest produce, you can find almost everything here. The same goes for those craving fresh river produce.

There is also an abundance of processed food, such as salted fish, smoked fish, pickles, sweets, crisps, and more.

One particularly interesting find at this time is the Sarawak almond, or Buah Empit.

The local community describes its shape and taste as similar to almonds. Also known as Pelajo fruit, it is a seasonal delicacy.

Since December, it has been found and harvested along the riverbanks in Sarawak. At Pasar Tamu Saratok, it is sold for RM5 per pack.

For the writer, this fruit is best enjoyed raw as a snack. However, some prefer to cook it by frying it with anchovies, chillies, onions, and seasonings.

In addition to Pelajo, it is now also easy to find Engkabang fruit, one of Sarawak’s unique delicacies, commonly referred to as “The Flying Helicopter.”

Some say that eating Engkabang fruit is similar to eating the Jering fruit.

At Pasar Tamu Saratok, it is sold for RM2 per pack, making it quite affordable.

Another highlight of Saratok Market is the catfish. Here, catfish are usually sold live, which is more expensive than the dead ones.

Many buyers claim that the catfish here are particularly “fatty” and have a distinct, richer taste compared to those from other places.

Due to the current rainy season, many catfish catchers have managed to haul in tens of kilograms in a single day.

However, the larger the supply, the lower the price.

There are also vendors selling grilled catfish, priced between RM8 and RM10, depending on the size.

Another attraction at Pasar Tamu Saratok is lobster.

Its price varies depending on the seller, the freshness, the size, and other factors.

For lobster lovers, a trip to Saratok is a must to experience its freshness and taste.

Pasar Tamu Saratok is an ideal location for purchasing daily necessities. Visitors won’t need to look elsewhere.

If you’re feeling thirsty, take a break at one of the many coffee shops nearby.

Indeed, the bustling activity at Pasar Tamu Saratok contributes significantly to the local economy, benefiting the community as a whole.
