KUCHING: A brand-new BYD Atto 3 electric vehicle will be the grand prize awaiting the sharpest golfer when the prestigious Mayor’s Challenge Trophy Golf Championship 2025 tees off on Aug 9, at the Sarawak Golf Club, here.

Now in its 20th edition since its inception in 1988, the tournament returns as a key highlight of Kuching Festival 2025, promising a vibrant celebration of sportsmanship, community spirit, and civic pride.

Organised by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) with the support of AFFIN Bank and in collaboration with Sarawak Golf Club, this year’s event is expected to attract around 250 participants, competing in two main categories: the VIP and Invited Guests Category and the Open Category, which is limited to 120 amateur golfers.

Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman said that among the most anticipated highlights is the hole-in-one prize — a BYD Atto 3 Ultra, an all-electric SUV worth RM127,000, aligning the championship with sustainable and future-ready values.

He said that players and spectators can also look forward to an array of attractive lucky draw prizes, further adding to the tournament’s festive atmosphere.

“More than just a competition, this tournament is a platform for fostering unity, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and strengthening the ties between city leadership, local communities, the private sector, and sporting enthusiasts,” said Hilmy during a press conference held at Sarawak Golf Club today.

He added that the Mayor’s Challenge Trophy also reinforces Kuching’s position as a sports and recreation destination, reflecting DBKU’s continued commitment to building a livable, sustainable, and resilient city, where physical development goes hand in hand with social cohesion.

Hilmy also extended his appreciation to all sponsors and strategic partners, especially AFFIN Bank and Sarawak Golf Club, for their continued support.

He announced that as part of the Kuching Festival celebrations, the Kuching Street Parade will take place on Aug 16, at Padang Merdeka, themed ‘Parade of Lights’.

This year’s parade will feature around 60 groups, including government agencies, private companies, NGOs, schools, neighbourhood associations (KJM), and universities.

Each group will showcase their creativity with lights, music, dance, and colourful costumes, highlighting Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage and unity.
