KUCHING: The construction of a bypass road to the Serikin Customs, Immigration, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex needs to be expedited to ensure the safety of residents once the complex begins operations.

Deputy Minister of Transport, Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said the existing road, which passed through village areas and the border market, was no longer suitable when traffic flow increased after the ICQS was fully completed.

“We can’t keep using the current road because it goes through residential areas.

“It will become congested and may affect the safety and comfort of the residents,” he said in an interview with Suara Sarawak yesterday.

Henry, who is also the Tasik Biru assemblyman, added there were already plans for the construction of the new road and land for the purpose had already been acquired.

“The planned road is a direct bypass to the ICQS without disturbing the village’s main route,” he explained.

On the impact of the ICQS development on the Serikin Market, Henry said the number of traders was expected to increase as long as they complied with the regulations set by the local authorities.

“We will not impose limits. The more traders, the better as they will boost the economy of both states and countries,” he said.
