DALAT: Police arrested two local men for allegedly stealing cables in Oya on Monday (Mar 17), solving several similar cases in Dalat.

Dalat police chief DSP Saga Chunggat said the suspects, both in their 30s, were arrested separately within a short period.

“Swift action by police, supported by strategic monitoring and information from the public, played a key role in apprehending the duo.

“Both were caught in the act of stealing cables. The first suspect was arrested immediately, while the second tried to flee but was eventually caught with help from the public,” he said.

Background checks revealed that both suspects had extensive criminal records — the first suspect with 14 priors and the second with 11.

Saga added that the suspects, who tested positive for drugs, are being remanded to facilitate investigations under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.

In addition, the first suspect will also be investigated under Section 12(2) and Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, while the second suspect faces charges under Section 15(1) of the same Act.

He pointed out that the success proves the effectiveness of police enforcement strategy and community cooperation in fighting crime.

Saga added that the arrests not only solved multiple theft cases in Dalat and Oya, but also demonstrated the impact of community involvement in reducing crime.

“Community awareness programmes, dialogue sessions, and joint patrols between authorities and community leaders have enhanced security in the district.

“Beyond police efforts, community involvement is vital in tackling crime. Local initiatives focused on crime prevention and drug abuse have also helped educate residents on safeguarding their neighbourhoods,” he said.
