SIBU: The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan branch distributed 300 packets of cakes to women in the town centre in conjunction with the International Women’s Day celebrated today.

Its chairman, Councillor Kevin Lau Kor Jie, said their mobile team distributed the cakes to those around Jalan Raminway and Jalan Wong Nai Siong.

“The Women’s Day celebration is not only to recognise women’s contributions at home but also in various fields.

“Many women have stepped forward to serve society alongside their male counterparts,” he said when met by reporters during a mobile service programme at a coffee shop here.

He stressed the importance of supporting and encouraging women as a community and working together with them.

“International Women’s Day is not just a reminder of gender equality and women’s rights.

“It is also a reminder that we should always support them, especially those who have stepped up in their own capacity to serve society,” he said.

Meanwhile, regarding the mobile service programme, Lau said their team not only covered the town centre but also reached out to the town’s folk.

“Our services usually include applications for the Kenyalang Gold Card (KGC) and Senior Citizen Health Benefit (SCHB).

“For the Bawang Assan area, we not only assist those in rural areas but also people in town.

“That’s why we have recently been bringing our mobile service around the town area,” he added.

Lau said that about 50 KGC and SCHB applications were received during the mobile service.
