KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has called for a review of private doctors’ consultation fees.
Given that the rates were last increased in 1982, Dr Sim said that the current fees were no longer reflective of the doctors’ sacrifices, especially when other professions had received several minimum wage increases during that time.
“As we all know, the consultation rates for private doctors have actually never been increased since 1982 and even the fees for senior doctors have remained unchanged since then.
“So, would you be willing to work for a salary set in 1982? That is why I have raised this issue with the Minister of Health, and he has promised to look into it,” he said during the launch of Valiant Medical Clinic at Batu Kawa New Township here today.
Dr Sim, who is also the Public Health, Housing and Local Governance Minister, said that an increase in the rates would indirectly help attract more talented doctors to serve in the country after completing their studies.
“If we want to retain capable and experienced talents, we cannot continue paying them according to 1982 rates. Otherwise, who else would remain with us? Therefore, we will do our best to support you and we are fighting for your interests,” he stated.
In line with that, he emphasised that he would continue engaging with the Ministry of Health (MOH) to ensure that the increase could be considered.
