SIBU: The recent tragedy of a two-year-old who died after falling into an uncovered manhole here serves as a strong reminder for parents and caregivers to stay alert, especially in crowded or public places.

Stating this, the National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) Sibu chairman, Lucas Lau, said young children often can’t spot hidden dangers, which makes active supervision essential for their safety.

“Everybody requires a safe and healthy environment. It is essential to focus on this human right. Ensuring safety isn’t solely up to the government. It requires the participation of individuals, families, communities, and local authority systems. Compliance with safety standards upholds safety within our community,” he said in a statement yesterday (Aug 5).

Lau said local authorities, like the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), play an important role in quickly tackling identified hazards.

Safety, he said, needs a combined effort from the government and a proactive community that can identify, monitor, and report possible safety concerns.

As such, he said MTPN is ready to work with SMC and the public to create a safer, healthier environment here.

Acting as a crucial link between the community and local authorities, he stressed that MTPN will encourage open discussion and collaboration through partnerships, awareness campaigns, and community involvement.

“This initiative seeks to promote public engagement and responsiveness regarding safety issues.

“Creating a safer environment is a responsibility for us all. It is vital that residents, MTPN, and SMC join forces to prevent future tragedies. United as a community, we can improve safety and wellbeing for everyone in Sibu,” Lau added.
