THE Sarawak government should actively seek more funds from the federal government in the next few years, while pursuing the autonomy of health and education which may take more time to be realised.

Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh said that the funds are very necessary to rebuild, upgrade and restore dilapidated schools and damaged student dormitories as well as rural clinics that are not fully equipped.

“Even in my area in Bawang Assan constituency, as many as 14 primary schools including student dormitories and three village health clinics are considered dilapidated and in need of upgrading.

“Therefore, more persistent efforts and more allocations are urgently needed from the federal government to improve our education and health facilities,” he said.

He said this when debating in support of the motion of appreciation to the former Head of State today.

For the record, the Premier in his speech on May 6 expressed his hope that the federal government would be able to provide adequate development allocations in line with Sarawak’s rights and status as a component partner in Malaysia.

According to Wong, the autonomy of health and education is the most frequently talked about by everyone in Sarawak but it took a very long time to be realised.

“No matter how much we shout about getting power back, it won’t come any time soon.

“Therefore, we can expect a long legislative and administrative process to obtain the transfer of power,” he said.
