KUCHING: The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) and the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) are urging the public and businesses in Sarawak to dispose of their used tyres through proper channels.
NREB Environmental Quality Controller Jack Liam said since 2012, ZHA Environmental Sdn Bhd has been appointed to collect and dispose of used tyres in Sarawak under the state’s 2012 regulation.
“The company has collected approximately 93,860 metric tonnes of tyres from 2013 to 2023, equivalent to nine million pieces.
“I call for cooperation from businesses and individuals to dispose of tyres through ZHA to avoid environmental pollution and unsightly waste,” he said during a joint press conference held at the Fire and Rescue Department Headquarters here today (May 29).
He went on to remind that improper disposal of tyres could result in fines up to RM30,000 or imprisonment up to one year.
The public and businesses, he said are also urged to cooperate with ZHA for tyre disposal, highlighting the environmental and safety benefits.
Meanwhile the Sarawak Bomba acting director Tiong Ling Hii highlighted the increased incidence of fires involving used tyres, which are difficult to extinguish and release toxic smoke.
Tiong went on to emphasise the importance of proper tire disposal to prevent such hazards.
Meanwhile ZHA’s director Bernard Yong described the company’s efforts in collecting used tyres across Sarawak and their recycling process.
“The tyres are shredded into rubber granules used in playground flooring, gym mats, and automotive products.
“ZHA’s initiative supports local recycling efforts and supplies materials to industries both in Malaysia and overseas,” Yong said.
