KUCHING: Cambodia is seeking opportunities for its students to pursue higher education in Sarawak as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s human capital.

Senior Minister in charge of Special Mission (Islamic Affairs) Cambodia, Datuk Dr Othsman Hassan, said they hoped Sarawak could offer special programmes or admission quotas in various fields.

“Cambodian students are interested in engineering, accounting, law and religion, although there are already many in religious studies,” he was quoted as saying in a news report by RTM Sarawak.

Othsman told a press conference this after paying a courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Kompleks Satria Pertiwi today.

The meeting also discussed potential cooperation in other areas, including adding Phnom Penh as a flight destination and collaboration in the agriculture sector.

Also present, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said Sarawak was ready to support Cambodia’s interest.

He added that the construction of an international Islamic school, expected to be completed in 2027, would provide opportunities for students from Malaysia as well as Islamic minority countries in Southeast Asia to further their studies.
