PETALING JAYA: The University of Cyberjaya has vowed to strengthen safety protocols on campus and at its residential facilities following the death of a student at a condominium unit provided by the institution.

In a statement today, the university said it was deeply saddened by the incident and extended its condolences to the student’s family and the wider university community.

“The safety of our students, their families and the surrounding community remains our utmost priority.

“In addition to existing measures, we are working closely with security experts to strengthen our safety procedures,” it said.

The university added that it is fully cooperating with the authorities to facilitate a thorough and timely investigation.

Members of the public and media are urged to respect the family’s privacy and to refrain from speculating or spread unverified information.

“We will continue to provide regular updates as appropriate and are committed to supporting our community throughout this period,” it said.

On Tuesday morning (June 24), 20-year-old Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara, who hailed from Kuching, Sarawak, was discovered dead in her Mutiara Ville condominium unit by a friend.

She was reportedly pursuing a bachelor’s degree in physiotherapy and had been sharing the unit with five other students, who had returned to their hometowns for the holidays on June 21.

Sepang police chief ACP Norhizam Bahaman said a post-mortem conducted at Serdang Hospital confirmed that the victim died from blunt force trauma to the head.

There were no signs of sexual assault.

A murder investigation had been opened and a manhunt is underway to track down the suspect involved in the case, which is being probed under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
