KUCHING: Canada has expressed interest in exploring strategic cooperation with Sarawak in the energy, agriculture and aerospace sectors.

Canadian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Jodi Rae Robinson, said Canada has numerous innovative companies and technical expertise that could support Sarawak’s development priorities in these areas.

She noted that such cooperation would also create opportunities for both sides to exchange technology and knowledge in industries with strong growth potential in Sarawak.

“We have many innovative companies in Canada, as well as expertise in areas that are priorities for Sarawak such as energy, agriculture and aerospace, which I understand is a relatively new field for the state.

“There are many opportunities for us to work together in these sectors,” she was quoted as saying in an UKAS report.

Earlier, Robinson paid a courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Satria Pertiwi Complex here today.

Robinson also said Canada sees potential to assist Sarawak in ensuring its mining industry is carried out in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner.

She said Canada recognises the Sarawak Government’s strong commitment to ensuring mining activities are conducted with environmental sustainability in mind.

“I know the Sarawak Premier has a very strong commitment to ensure that any mining activities are carried out sustainably.

“Therefore, we are looking at how Canada can support Sarawak from the perspective of the mining industry while ensuring it is implemented in a sustainable manner,” she added.

Following the meeting, Abang Johari also received a courtesy call from Norwegian Ambassador to Malaysia, Marianne Fosland.
