KUCHING: Federal Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has reaffirmed that the decision on candidates for any electoral constituency, including Kapit, rests solely with the party leadership, following recent public attention on potential future leaders.

At a recent community event in Kapit, he noted the importance of grooming leadership talent, mentioning his political secretary, Datuk Alvin Runggah Jimbun, as one of the promising figures for the future.

“The matter attracted public attention and sparked various reactions. I want to emphasise that candidate selection is ultimately under the prerogative of the party’s top leadership,” he said in a statement posted on his Facebook today.

Nanta, who has served six terms as Kapit MP, added that the final decision lies with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is also the president of both Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB).

“This is not new; it has always been the practice within the party,” he said, noting that the focus should remain on developing leadership talent at the grassroots level rather than speculating on specific names.

He stressed that building a strong pipeline of leaders ensures the party is prepared with capable individuals ready to shoulder responsibilities when needed.

“The continuity of Kapit’s development and progress must be sustained through committed, competent leaders who understand the needs of the people.”

Nanta also highlighted his commitment as a non-Muslim leader to uphold values of inclusivity, mutual respect and unity in Kapit’s multi-ethnic and multi-religious society.

“As long as I am entrusted with this responsibility, I will continue to serve with full dedication for the wellbeing of the people,” he said, thanking the community for their ongoing support.

Previously, Nanta had mentioned Alvin as his preferred successor for the Kapit seat should he decide not to contest in future elections.
