KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is committed to continuing the Car-Free Morning every month, with the aim to address traffic congestion, air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the programme’s main purpose is to raise community awareness about climate change and global warming.

“The city council is also trying to promote sustainable urban mobility, through the introduction of new bike lanes, improved public transportation services and campaigns aimed at promoting walking and cycling.

“We will continue this initiative hopefully every month. We will come up with small activity every time we organise the Kuching Car-Free Morning.

“With two big parks surrounding the MBKS building, we can organise a lot of small-scale programmes such as yoga session, treasure hunt, picnic, fitness session, nature walk in the park, traditional sport competition, rollerblade activity or skateboard activity alongside the Car-Free Morning,” he said.

He said this to reporters after flagging off the Fun Walk held in part of the 2nd Kuching Car-Free Morning at MBKS Boulevard here today (Oct 21).

He called on the public who wish to organise small scale activities during the next Kuching Car-Free Morning to come forward with their proposal to the council.

He said the council is aiming to promote this initiative and make it known to the public at large.

“We have ample spaces within our building for them to organise their activities. The more activities we have during the programme; the more participants would join the Kuching Car-Free Morning, thus it would educate more people.

“At the same time, we are open to any constructive feedback or ideas from the public in ensuring the programme benefits to the community. Help us to create a sustainable city,” he said.

The second edition of the programme featured activities such as a Zumba session, a Fun Walk, and a fishing competition held at Kuching Park Pond.

Following the enthusiastic response of the first Kuching Car-Free Morning, council has expanded the route from Jalan Boulevard Canna Lily to Jalan Padungan and Jalan Tan Sri Datuk William Tan covering a distance of 3.20km.
