MIRI: Policemen had to fire a warning shot into the air during a high-speed chase in pursuit of a car theft suspect at Miri Bypass Road last Tuesday.

Prior to the incident, a police report was lodged by the car’s owner that his gold coloured Perodua Kancil was missing, believed to be stolen from his house in Taman Tunku around 6am that same day.

Miri police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari said, a 21-year-old local man was detained around 12.50pm after a 30-minute high-speed chase. The suspect was taken into police custody for questioning.

Following up on the man’s arrest, police nabbed five other suspects, aged between 21 and 40 years, believed to be his accomplices in house breaking and car theft activities in the city.

Three of the suspects have previous criminal records and offences related to drugs.

During the arrests, police also recovered two stolen motorcycles and several other items. The case is being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code.

The six suspects are detained for investigations into house breaking and vehicles theft cases.
