KUALA LUMPUR: Cardiff City confirmed promotion to the Championship after defeating Reading 3-1 in an English Football League (EFL) League One match in Berkshire on Saturday.
The Bluebirds, owned by Malaysian businessman, Tan Sri Vincent Tan, secured their return to the second tier at the first attempt.
Goals from Rubin Colwill, Omari Kellyman and Perry Ng sealed the win, while results elsewhere confirmed Cardiff’s automatic promotion with three matches remaining.
The team celebrated the achievement with nearly 3,000 travelling supporters at the Select Car Leasing Stadium following the match.
Tan described the promotion as a proud moment, commending the players, coaching staff, management and supporters for their efforts throughout the season, while head coach Omer Riza and Rubin Colwill highlighted the team’s unity and pride in achieving promotion.
Meanwhile, another club owned by Tan, K.V. Kortrijk, also secured an immediate return to the Belgian Pro League after just one season, marking a remarkable comeback campaign.
The achievement places Kortrijk among a select few clubs, with only KV Mechelen having recorded a similar feat in the past 15 years, while a strong home record of 43 points out of a possible 48 proved key, with their only defeat coming against eventual champions SK Beveren. – BERNAMA
