KUCHING: Sarawak’s Carlson Ngo Qirui is set to dive into new waters as he competes in the 60th MILO/NSC/MAS Malaysia Age Group (MAG) Water Polo Championships.
Scheduled from Feb 14–16 at the State Aquatic Centre in Paroi, Seremban, this marks his maiden debut in the Under 21 category, after previously representing Sarawak in the Under 16 category.
Excited about the opportunity, Carlson Ngo shared his enthusiasm for the competition. “This is my first time representing the Sarawak Under 21 team, and it is definitely a big challenge for me.
It is an honour to compete in this prestigious event, and I am looking forward to giving my best,” said the athlete, who has represented Sarawak eight times and Malaysia once.
Carlson Ngo and his teammates have been preparing intensely for the event. “We’ve been focusing on endurance, teamwork, and improving our techniques,” he explained.
The team has undergone rigorous training under coach Voon Yong Hui, including swimming drills, tactical exercises, and practice matches.
The players train up to 10 times a week, with both morning and evening sessions to improve their skills and stamina.
Looking ahead, Carlson Ngo has set his sights on even bigger goals.
“I aim to qualify for the 12th Asian Age Group Championships in Singapore and compete in the MSSM in Johor later this year.
I want to continue improving and represent Sarawak and Malaysia in even larger competitions,” he said.
His father, Ngo Sie Haw, expressed his pride in his son’s hard work. “We are extremely proud of Carlson for being selected to represent Sarawak.
“He has worked so hard to balance his school, tuition, and training. This serves as a major milestone for him, and we are excited to see him compete.”
Despite being unwell in recent days, Carlson has shown remarkable determination, pushing through his illness to continue training and prepare for the competition.
His father offered encouraging words: “We reminded him to stay focused, enjoy the experience, and give his best. No matter the outcome, this is a fantastic opportunity for personal growth.”
As Carlson readies himself to embark on this new chapter, the water polo community, along with his family and friends, stands firmly behind him, supporting his journey both in the water and in life.
