BAU: Two locals have been arrested in connection with the fatal assault of an elderly carpenter in Kampung Atas Singai last night.

Police said the 63-year-old suspects – a retired soldier and a housewife – voluntarily surrendered at the police station.

Both, who are reportedly just friends, have been remanded to facilitate investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

The 73-year-old victim was found lifeless in front of an unnumbered house, with multiple injuries to his head, face, ears and hands.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred at 11:30 pm when the victim confronted the female suspect, alleging her of having an affair with other man.

“During the confrontation, the victim reportedly punched her twice in the face. She later ran from the house, grabbed a wooden stick and struck the victim, causing him to collapse.

“The male suspect, who was nearby collecting snails, intervened and assisted in restraining the victim before leaving the scene,” police said.

Paramedics later confirmed the victim’s death at the scene at 12:18 am today.

His body is scheduled for a post-mortem at Sarawak General Hospital tomorrow.

A forensic team from the Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) seized a five-foot wooden stick and a helmet found near the victim’s body. They also collected six suspected blood swabs for processing.

Police believe that the motive appears to be jealousy.
