HIDDEN deep in the heart of Bau, there is a secret gem waiting to be discovered – Satow Waterfall.

The waterfall is a stand-out because of its multi-tiered structure and unique megalithic feature.

Located in Kampung Bobak, Satow Waterfall cascades down at least six tiers, offering different vantage points and pools to explore.

On my trip to the waterfall, I explored the area until the foot of the second tier to see and take photographs of the very top tier.

Like the first tier, the second is easily accessible via a short concrete staircase and paved walk from the main entrance.

In fact, the short trek through nature to Satow Waterfall feels like stepping into another world – fresh air, birds singing, and the sound of rushing waters getting closer.

The initial part of the trail is paved with concrete paths, making it safe and easy to walk from the parking area to the falls in just a few minutes.

However, the walking trails and rocks area are slippery, requiring caution when exploring.

On the walking trails and rocks are green growth; probably algae, moss, or lichen that normally thrive in damp, shady, or low-airflow conditions. The green growth might have caused the trail and rocks to become slippery.

As you walk up the concrete pave ways, approaching the top level, you can begin to hear and see the powerful flow of Satow Waterfall at the first tier, surrounded by untouched nature.

Satow waterfall is popular for its crystal-clear pools and surrounding natural beauty.

The pool at the base of the falls is noted for its clarity. Its surroundings are suitable for relaxing due to the natural beauty, sounds of flowing water, and opportunities for activities like picnics or light hiking and bird watching.

The lush greenery and peaceful atmosphere create an ideal setting for unwinding.

Factors like crowds and cleanliness, however, can affect the experience, so choosing the right time to visit and being mindful of the environment is important.

Although the pool is not so deep for adults, it is advisable that parents accompany their children when they are in it. For children’s safety it is better to keep them in your sight.

A highlight, though, is a megalithic structure found at the sixth tier, which is considered one of the most interesting features of the site.

There are several small tiers with crystal clear pools below the top cascade.

The waterfall is surrounded by dense jungle and tall trees that provide cool, shady spots.

Overall, Satow Waterfall is the perfect spot for to cool down, relax and reconnect with nature. Don’t forget to bring your camera; every angle is pure magic.

Given that is it has at least six distinct levels of cascades, Satow Waterfall gives visitors variation like small pools, drops and different sections to explore.

Satow Waterfall is also one of the closest to Kuching, making it convenient for a day trip or weekend outing without a long travel or hiking commitment.

According to the locals, the waterfall is most impressive after heavy rain as the tiers become more dramatic – stronger water flow, more vivid cascades, which make it extra beautiful.

During dry season, water volume is less.

It is believed that the water at Satow Waterfall is classified Class 1 by Malaysian standards, meaning very good in terms of general water parameters, adequate ecosystem and many uses without treatment.

Aside from swimming, visitors can also have a picnic at Satow Waterfall, which offers family-friendly picnic areas that are cool and shady.

However, limited picnic spots are available, so it’s advisable to arrive early or reserve in advance.

While at Satow waterfall, visitors can also use the BBQ pits. There are two BBQ pits available at the waterfall.

Besides a concrete path, toilets and BBQ pits, gazebos are built in the area. There are three gazebos there.

Gazebos are built to provide shelter and comfortable places for visitors to relax or enjoy the view of the surrounding natural environment in a unique mix of natural and man-made amenities.

There are two toilets and one changing room. However, during my visit I noticed that the facilities are no longer usable.

According to a woman who collected the parking fee, the toilet facility had malfunctioned for quite sometime.

Whatever it is, Satow Waterfall is a captivating natural attraction that beckons visitors or travellers seeking tranquility and beauty.

The scenic trails leading to the waterfall offers glimpses of the rich biodiversity that Sarawak is renowned for.

The area is home to various flora and fauna, making it an excellent location for nature photography and bird watching.

For adventure seekers, the waterfall presents opportunities for exploration.

The stunning backdrop of the waterfall against the lush greenery creates an idyllic setting for recreational activities including picnics and family gatherings.

On top of that, the relatively less commercialised nature of Satow Waterfall may allow for a more intimate experience with nature compared to other tourist hotspots.

If you seek to simply unwind away from the hustle and bustle of city life, perhaps Satow Waterfall is a destination that could offer a memorable visit filled with awe and inspiration.

With its accessibility and stunning scenery, Satow Waterfall is undoubtedly a must-visit for anyone travelling through Sarawak.
