KUCHING: The iconic White Cat statue has been dressed in a Chinese New Year costume, with decorations designed around the Autonomous Rail Transit (ART).

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the cat statue is especially unique as it is always adorned with new costumes for every festive occasion.

“This statue reflects the Sarawak spirit of celebrating all festivals regardless of background, in line with our image as a City of Unity and a City of Harmony.

“I would like to thank the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) for once again decorating our iconic cat statue,” he said.

He said this after officiating at the symbolic lighting of the Chinese New Year decorative lights at the cat statue at the Padungan roundabout here last night (Feb 6).

Meanwhile, MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the concept of this year’s cat statue is very much in line with the Year of the Horse, which symbolises progress, success, speed and freedom.

He said the concept showcases to the public the direction and aspirations Sarawak aims to achieve.

“This concept was carefully planned, with the cat statue depicted as a driver on the route laid out in front of it, while the ‘Sarawak Maju Makmur’ sign is placed at the top of the statue,” he explained.

Wee said the horse, portrayed as an animal capable of running at great speed, symbolises speed and aligns with the development of the ART.

“Therefore, we want to continue moving forward and hope that all Sarawakians will remain loyal like the horse to the government that is leading the state towards progress,” he said.

He also expressed hope that all parties would appreciate and support the government’s vision in efforts to achieve a better future.

“Do not merely criticise; instead, come forward with constructive suggestions so that we can continue to improve.

“We will not allow criticism to pull us backwards. We will continue to move forward, as we always remember that our duty is to serve the people,” he said.
