KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) continues to keep tight control over the movement of students who are still on campus to ensure the students’ safety and welfare. Unimas deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Dr Kamarudin Kana said that among the measures taken was ensuring that students adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) such as social distancing, as well as prohibiting group activities and tightening the limits on students’ exit times. He said the university had also held discussions with the owners of internal cafes to open their respective cares, including during weekends to make it easier for students to purchase cooked meals. He explained that Unimas’ firm stance of not permitting students to return to their respective hometowns, especially during the festive season, was to curb the spread of Covid-19 which could put other students and campus residents at risk. He said the matter had been conveyed earlier to the students in March, that is, when they were planning to return to Unimas to continue their studies. Kamarudin said Unimas was concerned with the problems faced by students that cause them to have to remain on campus. Among them, he said, were the use of laboratories, the research needs of final year students, and the need for faster internet connections for online studies which are currently being implemented.
