SIBU: Catholic High School stole the limelight when its team was crowned the champion in the inaugural Sibu Division Inter-Secondary School Pickleball Competition 2025, which concluded at the SMI Pickleball Centre here on Saturday afternoon.
Emerging as the first runner-up was Woodland International School, followed by SMK Tung Hua Team A as the second runner-up and SMK Deshon for the third runner-up position.
Bukit Assek Assemblyman, Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, officiated at the closing ceremony and presented the prizes to the respective winners.
The two-day event commenced on September 5.
Hosted by Sibu Pickleball Association (SPA), it attracted 16 teams from 13 secondary schools.
In his closing remarks, Chieng, who is also SPA’s president, congratulated all the players for having truly made history together.
Describing the tournament as more than winning or losing, he stressed that it was about learning, teamwork and respect.
He was proud to see players showing passion and great sportsmanship on and off the court, adding that these qualities would serve them well beyond sports.
“We have also discovered new talents who will go on to represent Sibu in the Under-18 division and, hopefully, one day play at the state or even national level.
“My sincere thanks to the Sibu Education Department, schools, teachers, coaches, referees, officials, helpers and our generous sponsors – WTK, Grolite Group, KTS and Chickenlicious. Without your support, this event would not have been possible.
“Most of all, thank you to our student athletes. You are the heart of this competition. Whether you won a medal or not, you are already winners for your courage, commitment and effort,” Chieng added.
