DARO: Residents especially children and teenagers are urged to exercise greater caution when near riverbanks, particularly in Pulau Bruit.

This reminder follows the recent crocodile attack involving a 14-year-old boy at Rumah Jingga, Kelai, Pulau Bruit last week.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS) Datuk Abdullah Saidol said the incident was the first of its kind to occur in the Iban settlement on the island, serving as a stark reminder of the risks faced by communities living near river areas.

“Following this incident, I would like to advise all schoolchildren, particularly those living along riverbanks, to remain vigilant.

“It has been reported that many crocodiles are roaming in search of food in the areas between Daro, Serdeng and the surrounding regions,” he said after visiting the victim’s family and observing the ongoing search-and-rescue (SAR) operation at Rumah Jingga, Kelai, Pulau Bruit yesterday (Dec 28).

Abdullah, who is also the Semop assemblyman, noted that riverbanks in Pulau Bruit are the lifeline of local communities, most of whom depend on fishing and casting nets for their livelihood, therefore safety must be taken seriously.

He also stressed the need for immediate measures, including installing large warning signs at high-risk locations to clearly alert residents and visitors to crocodile dangers in the area.

In addition, he expressed hope that a survey would be conducted to assess the crocodile population in the affected areas and to determine whether follow-up actions, including population control measures, are necessary.

Meanwhile, Tanjung Manis MP Datuk Yusuf Abdul Wahab also reminded residents to remain cautious when near the river, whether for work or leisure.

“We cannot control the number of crocodiles, but we can control our activities. Do not encourage children to play near the river.

“Take precautionary steps. Avoid areas known to have many crocodiles and never go alone. If something happens, at least someone accompanying you can help,” he said.
