KUCHING: The closed-circuit television (CCTV) system managed by Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) is now back in operation, which started on Monday (Jun 30) under the first phase of its reactivation plan.

In its Facebook post, DBKU said a total of 64 CCTV units have been installed on 17 poles across key areas under its jurisdiction, covering public hotspots, main roads and locations considered high-risk.

“Among the locations equipped with the upgraded system are Taman Sukma Jalan Sultan Tengah, Tebingan Boyan Gersik, Jalan Astana Botanical Garden zones, Electra House, St Joseph’s Secondary School, McDonald’s Semariang, Former State Legislative Assembly building, and Fort Margherita (Police Museum),” the council said.

DBKU added the system is being revived in phases to ensure all units function optimally, marking a return to real-time monitoring for better urban safety management.

“This is part of our effort to improve city safety while supporting the development of a Smart City environment through technology,” DBKU stated.

The CCTV upgrade supports the Bandar Selamat (Safe City) initiative, while also serving as a crime prevention tool and assisting in traffic monitoring.

Residents have been urged to help protect the system from vandalism and to report suspicious activity through DBKU’s Facebook account, WhatsApp (016-8864466) and Hotline (082-446644)

DBKU stressed that cooperation from the public is crucial to maintain safety and ensure the success of the project.
