MIRI: Local Member of Parliament, Chiew Choon Man, has announced plans to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems at all 40 schools across his Miri constituency to enhance safety and curb bullying.

He said the initiative was spurred by the recent death of Zara, a student in Sabah who was allegedly bullied, that sparked public outrage and renewed calls for stronger protection in schools.

Speaking after a solidarity gathering here on Saturday night, he thanked organisers and residents for turning up peacefully to demand justice for Zara.

He said their presence reflected a wider determination among the community to stand against bullying.

“From this tragedy, two things are clear: we must ensure justice for Zara in the legal process, and we must guarantee that every child in our schools can learn in an environment that is safe both physically and mentally,” Chiew said.

The government has already announced a cross-ministerial initiative to streamline anti-bullying protocols, alongside an initial RM3 million allocation for CCTV installation in selected boarding schools nationwide.

Chiew said he would take an additional step at the constituency level, pledging CCTV installation at all 40 schools in Miri in phases, beginning with those identified as higher risk.

He stressed that the cameras would serve as a preventive measure, supporting teachers and administrators in monitoring school grounds, discouraging misconduct and ensuring a more secure learning environment.

“With collaboration between the people, the government and our local communities, we can ensure schools in Miri remain free from threats to safety and well-being,” he said.

“The safety of our children is non-negotiable; it is our shared responsibility.”

The solidarity gathering was part of a growing movement calling for stronger action to curb bullying and promote child safety across Malaysia.
