SIBU: Several residents and road users here have expressed growing concern over severely faded road markings along Jalan Salim and Jalan Wong King Huo.

Former Bukit Assek assemblywoman Irene Chang Oi Ling, after conducting a personal inspection, confirmed the markings are extremely faded and, in some sections, particularly at the Wong King Huo Roundabout, almost invisible.

“This neglect poses a serious threat to the safety of all road users, especially during night time or heavy rain. The chances of accidents increase significantly under such conditions,” she said in a statement, Tuesday (Aug 5).

Chang, who is also a lawyer, said the issue has been repeatedly raised by the public, but the local council has yet to resolve the complaints.

She stressed that road markings are vital safety measures essential for guiding traffic, maintaining lane discipline and preventing accidents.

As such, she called on the local council to act immediately by repainting the faded markings, not only along Jalan Salim and Jalan Wong King Huo, but also throughout Sibu where similar issues persist.

“If the job has already been assigned to contractors, then the council must question why it has not been done and hold them accountable.

“Public safety should never be compromised due to any inefficiency or neglect on the part of the relevant authority,” Chang added.
