KUCHING: St David Chapel in Kampung Bumbok received a RM195,000 grant from Sarawak’s Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) during a cheque presentation ceremony held on Sunday (Dec 28).
The presentation took place in conjunction with a Christmas gathering at the Kampung Bumbok community hall, attended by church members and local residents.
The grant cheque was presented by Batu Kitang Assemblyman Datuk Ir. Lo Khere Chiang, representing the Sarawak government and UNIFOR.
The contribution reflected the Sarawak government’s continued commitment to promoting religious harmony and supporting non-Muslim houses of worship throughout the state.
According to a press release by Lo, the UNIFOR allocation will be utilised for chapel-related development and improvement works at St David Chapel.
“These works are aimed at enhancing worship facilities while providing a more conducive environment for religious activities and community programmes,” he said.
“The improvements are also expected to benefit the surrounding community as the chapel serves as a focal point for gatherings and social engagement.
“Church representatives described the grant as timely, particularly as it was presented during the Christmas season, a period symbolising unity and goodwill.
Members of St David Chapel expressed their sincere appreciation to the Sarawak government for its consistent support of religious institutions.
They also conveyed gratitude to UNIFOR for recognising the needs of smaller congregations in rural and semi-rural communities.
“The Christmas gathering added significance to the ceremony, bringing together worshippers, families and community members in a festive and meaningful setting.
“The cheque presentation was seen as more than financial assistance, symbolising mutual respect and understanding among Sarawak’s diverse religious communities.
“Sarawak has long been recognised for its inclusive policies that ensure equal support for different faiths across the state,” added Lo.
UNIFOR plays a key role in this effort by channelling government assistance for development and maintenance of non-Muslim places of worship.
The ceremony at Kampung Bumbok highlighted how such initiatives strengthened interfaith harmony and social cohesion at the grassroots level.
The event concluded on a positive note, reflecting the spirit of unity, goodwill and mutual respect that continued to define Sarawak’s multicultural society.
