THE release of SPM results is just around the corner, and many school leavers are already exploring potential courses for their tertiary education.

If you’re among them, you’re probably wondering—what career paths do these courses lead to?

As a communication specialist, I often receive inquiries from students who confuse some communication-related courses.

To provide clarity, I’ve broken them down into simple terms to help you reflect on where your passion lies and what truly sparks your interest.

In the field of communication, there are several foundational programs to consider before delving into more advanced studies:

1. Journalism

Do you love writing and storytelling?

If so, journalism might be the perfect field for you.

At its core, journalism revolves around writing and listening — there’s simply no escaping it. It’s an ideal choice for individuals who are curious, adventurous, and ready to embrace the challenges of uncovering and sharing stories.

As Kristen Welker famously said, “Journalists like to talk and write and produce, but the most important part of that process is learning how to listen.

And that’s what makes you a good journalist.”

However, being a journalist is no walk in the park.

The work often involves odd hours, particularly for investigative journalists or news reporters covering breaking stories.

Even lifestyle journalists sometimes find themselves burning the midnight oil, especially when inspiration strikes at unconventional hours.

While the pay might not always be glamorous, the rewards come in other forms: the knowledge you gain, the experiences you collect, and the invaluable networks you build.

Journalism exposes you to people from all walks of life, allowing you to forge connections that can last a lifetime.

If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing your byline in a newspaper, reporting live as a broadcast journalist, or documenting impactful stories, this could be the path for you.

2. Broadcasting

Are you drawn to broadcast platforms like television and radio?

For those with a flair for creativity and comfort with technology, broadcasting might be your calling.

This field is perfect for individuals who thrive on bringing ideas to life through visual platforms like news videos, films, or documentaries.

Broadcasting equips you with essential technical skills, such as video editing, while challenging your creativity to produce engaging and impactful content. If the idea of storytelling through dynamic media excites you, this course could open the door to a vibrant and ever-evolving career.

3. Public Relations (PR)

Public relations is a dynamic field that requires excellent interpersonal and strategic communication skills. As someone who majored in PR, I can attest to its rewarding nature — especially for extroverts who enjoy networking, building relationships, and staying socially active.

One key skill to highlight is the ability to multitask.

PR professionals wear many hats, from managing an organisation’s reputation through well-thought-out communication strategies to writing press collateral and handling media relations.

If you thrive on connecting with people, thinking critically, crafting compelling narratives, and solving problems, PR might be the perfect fit for you.

4. Advertising

Advertising, on the other hand, focuses on the art and science of effectively promoting products, services, or ideas to audiences.

This field is a fascinating mix of imagination and data-driven decisionmaking.

It requires professionals to create narratives that captivate audiences while balancing the storyline to avoid over-promoting products.

Success in advertising demands innovative thinking, adaptability and an in-depth understanding of the target audience.

With all these fundamentals in communication, the next million-dollar question is: are communication jobs in demand globally, including in Malaysia?

The good news is that communication-related roles — such as public relations specialists, advertising executives, and journalists — are consistently sought after.

For instance, over 20,000 communication-related job vacancies were listed on JobStreet in Malaysia in early 2025. Even with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), these roles remain critical.

While AI might reshape certain aspects of communication, it cannot replace the uniquely human qualities that communication jobs require — such as creativity, empathy, cultural awareness, and the ability to connect authentically with diverse audiences.

In fact, new roles may emerge, such as overseeing AI systems, enhancing storytelling capabilities, or integrating AI into creative processes.

Final Thoughts: Finding the Right Path

Choosing the right course can feel overwhelming, but remember—every journey comes with its own unique set of challenges and opportunities.

The communication field remains an attractive choice for those with a passion for storytelling, creativity and strategic thinking.

Importantly, the key is to align your choice with your passions, strengths, and long-term goals. Good luck on this exciting new chapter of your life!
