KUCHING: Chemists have an important role to play in supporting Sarawak’s transition towards a green economy.

In stating this, Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Hazland Abang Hipni, acknowledged contributions made by the Sarawak branch of Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM) to the development of chemistry and scientific excellence in the state.

“Their expertise will be essential in advancing the state’s net-zero aspirations and green hydrogen initiatives,” he said.

Dr Hazland made these remarks at the IKM Sarawak 40th Anniversary Chemistry Night, themed ‘Chrome & Crimson’ here on Saturday.

He commended the branch for its achievements since its inauguration in 1986, noting its steady growth into a strong professional body.

Over the years IKM Sarawak has grown from just 25 pioneering members in 1986 to more than 500 members today.

Dr Hazland also highlighted the upcoming 51st IUPAC World Polymer Congress, which will be held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching in July.

The event will further strengthen Sarawak’s position as a regional hub for scientific innovation and research, he said.

During the event, IKM Sarawak recognised outstanding academic achievement through its 2026 IKM Merit Awards.

Abdul Somad Mustapha Kamal received the award in the Bachelor of Science category, while Antonio Choon Kiat Anak Niang was honoured in the Master of Science category.

It also acknowledged the contributions of its long-standing collaborators, including Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Universiti Teknologi MARA Cawangan Sarawak, the Department of Agriculture Sarawak, Jabatan Kimia Malaysia Negeri Sarawak, Jabatan Kimia Malaysia Cawangan Sibu, Chemsain Konsultant Sdn Bhd and Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School for supporting STEM education and chemistry outreach programmes across the state.

Guests were also presented with scented candles produced by the Kampung Baru, Samarahan community through the UniMADANI ‘Waste to Wealth’ project, led by UNIMAS and supported by the Ministry of Finance, which promotes community empowerment through green innovation and circular economy practices.

More than 200 members and guests attended the event. Also present was IKM President, Soon Ting Kueh.
