SIBU: Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng is proposing that the Sarawak Media Sports Carnival (KASUMeS) be made an annual event to encourage a healthy lifestyle and strengthen camaraderie among media professionals.
He also called for the carnival to be expanded statewide so that more members of the media fraternity across Sarawak could benefit.
“Journalists often perform demanding duties that require unwavering commitment, regardless of time or day.
“KASUMeS offers a meaningful platform for them to unwind, bond with peers and prioritise both physical and mental well-being,” Chieng said.
He was officiating at the closing ceremony of the KASUMeS 2025 Pickleball Tournament, organised by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), at the IPSS Pickleball Courts here on May 15.
Chieng also drew a parallel between the journalism profession and public service, saying both require strong time management, community dedication, and the ability to balance personal and professional commitments.
The KASUMeS 2025 Central Zone featured futsal and pickleball competitions, with participation from six men’s futsal teams, two women’s futsal teams, and 36 pickleball players.
Held in conjunction with the Sarawak-level National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) celebration, the event will continue in the Northern Zone in Miri on May 24 and end in the Southern Zone in Kuching on Jun 9 and 10.
Also present at the event was UKAS director Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan.
