SIBU: The emphasis on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education among children is important while they are still young, as it can cultivate their interest.

Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang said that STEM related programmes introduce children to various fields including robotics, electronic gadgets and digital interactives.

He stressed this when launching the Sarawak Children’s Arts and Literature Festival (SCALF) 2025 held at the Sibu State Library (Pusaka) yesterday (Sept 6).

Tiang reiterated that it was crucial to prepare the younger generation to face a future based on technology.

“Yes, this is how we start preparing children to get used to technology, so they can prepare themselves to face a future based on the digital economy,” he said.

The Pelawan assembyman cited that SCALF was in line with the direction of the state government’s Digital Economy Roadmap which has been in force for the past few years.

“This is the right path in promoting STEM education to children,” he said.

He also described the festival as an important effort in stimulating children’s imagination to continue seeking new knowledge.

“This is how we need to make the most of the Pusaka as a platform and avenue to gather children, continue to foster their interest in seeking new knowledge, expand their imagination, and hold interactive programmes.

“In today’s modern era with sophisticated technology, the interactive element is very important,” he said.

SCALF is one of the annual programmes by Pusaka to celebrate children and their talents in various fields.

This year’s event, themed Cosmic Explorers aims to introduce Pusaka to children— not only as a place to borrow or return books, but also as a centre for technology, creativity and hands-on activities.

The event is open to children of all ages, including special children, to ensure that they do not miss out on every learning opportunity being organised.

Additionally, it is also a platform to produce a knowledgeable and innovative future generation.

Also present were Fairul Azli, regional manager Pusaka Sibu and SCALF coordinator, Nur Amanina Mastani.
