KUCHING: The Mid-Autumn Festival 2025 Celebration at Plaza Merdeka came alive with colours, creativity and cultural harmony as more than 50 children showcased their artistic talents during the Children’s Colouring Contest held on Saturday.

Organised by the Kuching Suriamas Fans of Art, Dance and Music Association in collaboration with Plaza Merdeka and the Kuching Association of Talent Development and Welfare of Special Needs (KATSN), the 10-day event reflected Sarawak’s unity in diversity through art, dance and music.

The festival featured performances by the Teochew Orchestra, singing showcases, the Gifted Art Gallery Exhibition and family-friendly competitions such as the Kids Cheongsam Contest.

In the Children’s Colouring Contest, participants aged between seven and twelve years old expressed the Mid-Autumn spirit through colourful artworks depicting togetherness, harmony and family celebration.

In Category A (ages 7-9), Fateha El Zahra Ahmad Fadzrul emerged as the winner, followed by Chang Zi Heng and Chiang Wern Syuen as first and second runners-up respectively.

For Category B (ages 10-12), Celine Wong Hui Ci clinched the top spot, with Amni Husna Iswandi and Izz Dzakirin Qayyum Iswandi named as first and second runners-up.

In his remarks, Datuk Sim Kiang Chiok, Chairman of the Kuching Suriamas Fans of Art, Dance and Music Association, expressed pride in seeing children and families from various communities – Chinese, Malay, Dayak and others – celebrating together.

“The Mid-Autumn Festival is traditionally Chinese, but in Sarawak, it has become a celebration for everyone. Our shared joy and participation show how our multicultural society continues to live in harmony, appreciating each other’s traditions and values,” he said.

He also extended his appreciation to all participants, parents, sponsors and volunteers for their support, particularly in empowering special children and young adults from KATSN to showcase their talents and confidence.

The Mid-Autumn Festival at Plaza Merdeka once again highlighted the Sarawak spirit: unity in diversity, inclusivity through the arts, and togetherness as one big family.
