SIBU: Chinese medicine is now widely accepted by people outside China, said Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek.
“It is unique on its own and has healing properties which evolved over thousands of years to become a successful business today.
“It’s science is being developed over the years and has been tested through time to emerge with positive changes and creativity,” he said in his speech at the closing ceremony of the 2nd World Chinese Medicine Forum at a leading hotel here last night (June 26).
The three-day forum hosted by theSarawak Traditional Chinese Physicians Association (STCPA) and co-organised by theAsia Skills College (ASC) was attended by more than 600 participants from China, Taiwan, Singapore, Brunei and Peninsular Malaysia.
Chieng said Chinese medicine is being merged with modern medical technology and is effective in treatment, adding that experts are employing modern scientific skills to further develop it.
Treatments are being administered with Chinese medicine, acupuncture and massage to speed up recovery.
“Chinese medicine has benefited with the combination of Eastern and western medicine. However, in the changing world of fast-paced development and skills, it is now faced with challenges.
“Modern technology must be used to counter it by researching and educating the people to preserve it.
“We must protect it and spread the culture of medicine and treatment to let it be effectively used,” he said.
On the forum, Chieng said it was a historical event not only helped to promote Chinese medicine outside China, but also helped to promote the development of Chinese drugs.
Honorary advisor of STCPA Datuk Lau Ngie Hua and president Dr Tony Kong Choon Hing were among those present.
